To Buy Google's G1 Phone or Not To Buy? That is the Question!

Ok. So I've seen the reviews of Google's new G1 phone and as a happy T-Mobile customer, I'm very, very tempted to buy it. I'm quite impulsive with electronic purchases at times (I will admit) but bought the Blackberry Curve only 2 months ago. I enjoy having the Blackberry Messenger and all of the various applications that have been created for the device over the years but am tempted to have the "newest" thing and discovering all that Google has to offer via a phone. I suppose I should be patient and wait for more reviews until I jump into it... but part of me wants to buy it and discover it for myself and spread the word! Will it be as "professional" as the Blackberry? Will it be the iPhone killer? Oh the questions!
Engadget has had several posts about the phone today - located here, here and here. (There's more on the site if you look).
What do you guys think?

Nah, I think they should have teamed up with Apple to make software for the iPhone. As a previous Sony Ericsson user, I ‘converted’ to the iPhone 3G on launch day and I am shocked that I was in need of so much persuasion before hand. Their menu system if by far the best I have ever used and it clearly comes across that they value the user experience rather than just ramming a phone full of technology and leaving it at that.
The Google phone, I am unsure because it’s something new and I think I’d need to see how the first one does in terms of reviews and it’s overall success before getting one. Something I use as much as my phone, I need to know for sure before I get it that it’s going to work for me. Imagine hating the thing you have to use all the time, it would get so annoying.
But… After all that, what it boils down to is cost. If it’s affordable (handset and tarrif) then I guess it’s worth a try!

@Locksley
Great point… It’s usually best to wait for all the reviews and to wait until all the “bugs” have been worked out. I may just do that…shame I can’t test drive it for a week

Hi Kate,
I had the chance to play around with it for a while and I can assure that it will compete with the iPhone in a couple of months and over exceeds any Blackberry or other smart phone capability already.
If you wanna stick with T-Mobile then this is the device to go for.
There are some very innovative apps out there already that make smart use of a combination of the built-in technology (compass, GPS, accelerator, touch screen, camera, scrollball, etc.). I specifically liked the barcode scan app, the pattern recognition system to unlock your phone (way better than typing in a code, it’s a simple self-defined gesture on the screen), iris scan, lots of location-based services and for sure the deepest integration of all sorts of Google services like Google Docs, Gmail, Gtalk, Maps and many more. The full keyboard is a plus compared to the iPhone and writing longer emails or even documents.
I love my iPhone 3G but I’ll definitely get a G1 too, it will be able to compete with whatever is on the market, now and in the future.
Cheers, Frederik
